⚡ Quick Solution (TL;DR)
This error happens when SAS creates your library pointer (MYLIB), but the physical file class.sas7bdat does not exist at that specific directory path. In SAS OnDemand for Academics, use the tilde server home shortcut:
LIBNAME mylib '~/my_sas_files';
Why Does This Error Happen?
When you run a LIBNAME statement in SAS, SAS establishes a two-part pointer: LIBREF.DATASET_NAME. Even if your folder path is misspelled or completely empty, SAS will frequently display a green note saying: NOTE: Libref MYLIB was successfully assigned.
However, the real test occurs when you invoke the DATA Step with SET mylib.class;. SAS navigates into that directory expecting to find a physical file named class.sas7bdat. If it isn't there, execution halts with:
ERROR: File MYLIB.CLASS.DATA does not exist.
The 3 Most Common Reasons & How to Fix Them
1. You Are in SAS OnDemand Cloud Using a Local Drive Path
If you write LIBNAME mylib 'C:\Users\John\Documents'; in SAS Studio OnDemand for Academics, it fails because SAS runs on remote Linux cloud servers. It cannot access your local Windows or Mac hard drive.
The Fix: Upload your file into the Server Files and Folders panel on the left, then use the home tilde shortcut:
/* ✅ Correct Cloud Path */
LIBNAME mylib '~/my_sas_files';
DATA work.class_copy;
SET mylib.class;
RUN;
2. Copying the Exact Server Path via Folder Properties
Never guess or manually type long path strings. In SAS Studio:
- Go to Server Files and Folders in the left sidebar.
- Locate the folder containing your
.sas7bdatfile. - Right-click the folder → select Properties.
- Copy the full Location path (e.g.
/home/u58291044/my_sas_files). - Paste it directly inside quotes in your
LIBNAMEstatement.
3. File Format Mismatch (Excel / CSV vs. SAS Dataset)
SAS DATA steps only read native .sas7bdat files directly via SET. If your file is named class.xlsx or class.csv, you must import it first using PROC IMPORT:
PROC IMPORT DATAFILE="~/my_sas_files/class.xlsx"
OUT=mylib.class
DBMS=XLSX
REPLACE;
RUN;
